Evening primrose oil is extracted from the evening primrose plant (Oenothera biennis), a wildflower found in North America, Europe and parts of Asia. The plant's pale yellow flowers open in the evening--hence its common name--and the oil is extracted from its seeds. Evening Primrose Oil contains linolenic acid (LA) and gamma linolenic acid (GLA), essential ingredients in the vital production of prostaglandins within the human body. Prostaglandins are hormone-like compounds that are in constant use throughout the body, controlling inflammation, clotting the blood, and synthesizing cholesterol. Prostaglandins cannot be stored so they need to be replenished regularly.

The process of prostaglandin production can be blocked or seriously slowed down by the lifestyle and diet of the modern world. Factors such as aging, high cholesterol, stress, high alcohol intake, diabetes, saturated fats, refined carbohydrates and viral infections may result in prostaglandin deficiency. The  GLA content in EPO may be the answer to ensuring prostaglandin production remains at its peak.
